| Keyword Search | Keyword search is the default search when you first arrive at the page. For example, input the term, "Harbor," then press the search button. The next page displays the results with thumbnail views of the images while giving you a brief description. Click on the thumbnail to see a larger image. Click on the object ID, formatted as BGE.####, to see the full record. Many searches will have multiple pages of results, as with the "Harbor" search. Click on the numbers at the top or the bottom of the page to view more search results. If the search returns no records, suggested searches will be displayed. This will happen when you search "blast furnace," for example. No results will come up, but the database will suggest for you to search "furnace" or "furnaces." Click on the suggest search and results for that term will be displayed. |
| Click & Search | The Click & Search function allows the user to browse the records. For example, click on the letter "A" next to "Search Terms." A drop down box will appear. For example, scroll down to "Advertising," and click it. A list of records which only contain "Advertising" as a search term will appear. Go back, and scroll down, and choose "Advertising | Street Scenes." This will then display records which contain both Advertising and Street Scenes. The Click and Search feature is useful for browsing through records by search term or when a keyword search is too broad. |
| Advanced Search | The Advanced Search Function allows for specific searches including various fields, including keywords, caption, search terms, catalog number, lexicon category or sub-category, description, and by date. Use the Advanced search feature for directing specific searches. One example would be to search for steel workers during the 1950s. Put "workers" as a search term, "steel" in the description, "1950" as the start date, and "1960" as the end date. Click "search" at the bottom of the page to see the results. |
| Random Images | Click on "Random Images" on the left side of the screen to see random images from the collection. Click on the object ID to see the full record, or click on the thumbnail to see a larger image. |
